You have to hand it to new Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie for wanting to finally once and for all discredit the so-called birther movement by seeking a way to release more information about President Barack Obama’s birth records from Hawaii. If only discrediting the movement was that simple. Much like the alien spacecraft in Roswell or the second gunman in Dallas, this conspiracy movement is not going to ever go quietly into the night.
The thing with the internet is that one person’s voice can echo over and over again to the point where you think you are hearing a roaring crowd even though in reality it is still one person’s voice.
The birther movement claims that Obama was born in Kenya. This despite the fact that he was certified to run for president by the Federal Election Commission. Also despite the fact that his short form birth certificate was sh0wn to the public. And even despite the release by the Honolulu Star Advertiser of their archived newspaper from 1961 with his birth announcement.
Birth certificates from Kenya have been produced and spread around the web like a virus. The antidote – glaring issues that make these certificates nothing more than poorly-made fake documents – has been much slower at reaching the citizens of the web.
You can find pages upon pages via a Google search of how no one remembers Obama during the time he attended Columbia College in New York City. Upon closer inspection, you will find that many of those websites are reciting the exact same words over and over from one former student of Columbia College. There also are stories of people that speak of knowing Obama during those same years, but I suppose the conspiracists would say they are lying or have been brainwashed. Anything is possible. Probable but unlikely in my opinion.
Personally, the issue which bothers me most of all, is why Obama continues to refuse to release records of his life before office. As the holder of the highest elected office in America, what is he afraid of if his original birth documents, school records and college transcripts are released?
Obama ran for office promising full disclosure and transparency within our government. He hasn’t exactly lived up to that promise in neither his personal life nor professional career. Not that I am surprised as the federal government is a very large entity and not easily made transparent.
Seen from afar it is almost like Obama is prone to believing in conspiracies himself. Perhaps he aspired to the presidency to satisfy his own thirst for answers about conspiracy theories surrounding the inner workings of our government. Unfortunately, that same mentality, might also lead him to think the world is out to get him and cause him to further draw the curtains around the details of his past.
Then again, maybe I am the one being paranoid.
